Pike Match 2009

Conditions could not have been better for the 2009 pike open on cheddar res. after saturdays wind and rain the calm sunny conditions on sunday proved ideal for the 19 competitors spread out between axbridge tower and the southwest bank.
After only 2 minutes Fran Pavey netted the 1st fish of the day of 7lb taken on herring, shortly after R heard lost one at the net before taking an early lead with an 8lb 4 fish on mackeral. However this did not last long as next amongst the action was Steve Whitehead from Bristol banking a 10lb 2 specimen again on mackeral, Steve eventualy took 3rd spot by adding to his tally with a pike of 7lb. Fran Pavey kept up the pressure with 2 more fish of 10lb 9 and 5lb 12 to take 2nd place. The over all winner was Worle based angler Roger Inglis taking 3 fish for a total of 24lb 15. The 1st came on a popped up skimmer followed by a 10lb 3 taken on a large silver spinner which was just reward for his persistence, Rogers 3rd was a modest 6 pounder but just enough to scoop the top lolly. Over all 12 pike saw the light of day the best in the brief history of the competition. Around 8 fish slipped the hook including 3 from Fran. Heaviest pike landed was 11lb from Chris Hart.
Fished with great spirit and plenty of banter its a pleasure to organise and take part in so thanks to all on the day.

Pike Match Report

On Sunday 23rd November the annual open Pike match took place on Cheddar Reservoir. As usual this popular event was sold out weeks ago with 22 anglers taking part. The day started cold and wet for the 7am draw and the forecast for the day was high winds and heavy showers, which for anyone who knows Cheddar Reservoir is far from ideal. However it wasn't long before the first fish was banked by Steve Lye from Clutton, a modest 6lb 11ozs.....click to read on...

Easter Pike

While some of us were at home eating our eggs, some people had more important things in mind with some late season piking. Bailiffs reported a few anglers at the weekend mainly around the Axbridge Entrance with catches including pike up to 15lb. Please note deadbaiting is allowed until 16th June. Sea deadbaits are still producing the best pike.

Plenty of Doubles Show This Weekend.

The Axbridge entrance continues to be the place to fish on the res for pike. This weekend many of you took to these banks, and the word is plenty of pike in double figures some up to 15lb. Best results will be found using popped up baits fishing 10-20m out. Please remember there is still lots of weed though. Also for those of you interested in the roach they are now topping early mornings and evening, so should be worth a try. Please if you do catch click this story to send in your pictures

Axbridge Entrance 'Hot Spot'

Fish are continuing to come out from the axbridge entrance. At least 5 fish have been reported up to 12lb. The shallower 12-13ft water here at this time usually does not give many fish but the weed really must be bringing them in. The much deeper (40ft+) waters towards the Axbridge tower which is where the pike usually are in Janurary is proving much less productive. Contrary to popular belief the Axbridge entrance would seem to be the moments 'hot spot'.

December 2007 Roundup

Reports of up to 18lb pike have been taken from the South-South West bank, with sea baits giving the best results. A few fish up to 12lb have been caught from near to the Axbridge Tower. For the time of year fish to about 15lb should be possible with reports of fish even taken from the Axbridge entrance. With the weather being how it has been weed build up here has caused the roach to move in. This has lead to some tricky but rewarding fishing. Plumming the depth at this entrance is always advised..
